Approximation Algorithms via Structural Results for Apex-Minor-Free Graphs

چکیده
We develop new structural results for apex-minor-free graphs and show their power by developing two new approximation algorithms. The first is an additive approximation for coloring within 2 of the optimal chromatic number, which is essentially best possible, and generalizes the seminal result by Thomassen [32] for bounded-genus graphs. This result also improves our understanding from an algorithmic point of view of the venerable Hadwiger conjecture about coloring H-minor-free graphs. The second approximation result is a PTAS for unweighted TSP in apexminor-free graphs, which generalizes PTASs for TSP in planar graphs and bounded-genus graphs [20,2,24,15]. We strengthen the structural results from the seminal Graph Minor Theory of Robertson and Seymour in the case of apex-minor-free graphs, showing that apices can be made adjacent only to vortices if we generalize the notion of vortices to “quasivortices” of bounded treewidth, proving a conjecture from [10]. We show that this structure theorem is a powerful tool for developing algorithms on apex-minor-free graphs, including for the classic problems of coloring and TSP. In particular, we use this theorem to partition the edges of a graph into k pieces, for any k, such that contracting any piece results in a bounded-treewidth graph, generalizing previous similar results for planar graphs [24] and bounded-genus graphs [15]. We also highlight the difficulties in extending our results to general H-minor-free graphs.

Bidimensionality
1 PROBLEM DEFINITION The theory of bidimensionality provides general techniques for designing efficient fixed-parameter algorithms and approximation algorithms for a broad range of NP-hard graph problems in a broad range of graphs. This theory applies to graph problems that are " bidi-mensional " in the sense that (1) the solution value for the k ×k grid graph and similar graphs grows with k, t...
متن کاملApproximation of minimum weight spanners for sparse graphs
A t-spanner of a graph G is its spanning subgraph S such that the distance between every pair of vertices in S is at most t times their distance in G. The sparsest t-spanner problem asks to find, for a given graphG and an integer t , a t-spanner ofGwith theminimumnumber of edges. The problem is known to be NP-hard for all t ≥ 2, and, even more, it is NP-hard to approximate it with ratio O(log n...
متن کاملFast Partitioning l-apex graphs with Applications to Approximating Maximum Induced-Subgraph Problems
A graph is l-apex if it can be made planar by removing at most l vertices. In this paper we show that the vertex set of any graph not containing an l-apex graph as a minor can be quickly partitioned into 2 l sets inducing graphs with small treewidth. As a consequence, several maximum induced-subgraph problems when restricted to graph classes not containing some special l-apex graphs as minors, ...
متن کاملApproximate Counting via Correlation Decay on Planar Graphs
We show for a broad class of counting problems, correlation decay (strong spatial mixing) implies FPTAS on planar graphs. The framework for the counting problems considered by us is the Holant problems with arbitrary constant-size domain and symmetric constraint functions. We define a notion of regularity on the constraint functions, which covers a wide range of natural and important counting p...
